Popularly known for rock-cut caves and ancient temples, Mahabalipuram is located on the Coromandel Coast along the Bay of Bengal. It was named after a famous demon king Mahabali, which has been renamed as Mamallapuram. The town is famous for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Group of Monuments, which are architectural wonders and known for their intricate carvings. Chennai initiated co-treatment of septage at STPs in the early 2000s. At present, co-treatment is being undertaken at three locations namely, Nesapakkam, Perungudi and Kodungaiyur. (Table 2) Nesapakkam services the south western part of the city, Perunguddi services the southern part of the city and Kodungaiyur services the northern part of the city. This study on co-treatment of septage at STPs focuses on the Nesapakkam site.

Chennai, the largest city in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu, is currently home to 474 wetland complexes that serve as the lifeline for its people, nature and wildlife. Sadly, over the last few decades the majority of these wetlands have been degraded due to human encroachment, untreated sewage inlets, garbage dumping and the city’s rapid economic growth. The Adyar River, originating near the Chembarambakkam Lake in Kanchipuram district, is one of the three rivers which winds through Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu, India, and joins the Bay of Bengal at the Adyar estuary. The 42.5-kilometre (26.4 mi) long river contributes to the estuarine ecosystem of Chennai. Despite the high pollution levels, boating and fishing take place in this river.
